Taru tattoo

Tribal tattoos from the Taru people.

The taru people live in the Torai area of Nepal. That is in the flat land, before the start of the mountains. The taru women get full body tribal tattoo. A non tattoed woman can not serve food to the rest of the community.

Originally,the tattoos were a protection against malaria. Mixing ashes and herbs into the ink, the tattoos were medecinal. The arms and leggs designs are tribal. Trees and rivers represented by lines are the usual motifs.

With modern times, the tattoo tradition is dying, as the kids move to the city to find jobs. Soon, this art form for the taru tribe will be a thing of the past...

Nepal opened it's first tattoo convention. In preparation for the 2011 International convention, the 2010 gathering was a complete sucess of Art and music.

This woman had a lotus on her lower back, and a flower on the top shoulder. As she wanted to join the both flowers using plants pattern, the best way is to go free hand, in order to fit the back perfectly. First, Bikas draws the design.

The flowers are then joined, with new leaves, and flowers.

The result is a beautiful flower back:)

Bamboomandu

South East Asia is reputated for it's unique and traditional use of bamboo tattoo. Ink marks take the form of mantras and various gods of the buddhist panteon. Originally they were done by priest and monks. The tattoos are used for protection, or to show one's position in society.

During a trip to Thailand, Bikas learned the bamboo tattoo technique. Back in Kathmandu, he is one of the first nepalese to offer bamboo tattoo in a shop.

The lotus flower represents the East, with the meditation tradition, and a trishula pointing to the roots.

The East and West unite with a design wrapping around the legg inspired by Hindu and traditional tribal designs. A nice continuation for the 2 leggs.

Bikas Gautam started tattoing 6 years ago in Nepal. As a kid in his home town, Hetauda, he was already doodling on his friends and family's skin.

After a while in the fashion business, Bikas decided that he needed more art in his life. He decided to go for the tattoo life.

In 2005, he opened Grasshopper Studio, in Thamel.
In 2009, he enters Funky Buddha. During his travels, Bikas, always looks for new ways to improve his art. In 2010, during a trip to Thailand for his first tattoo convention, Bikas learned bamboo technic.

When he is not tattoing, he likes to play the didgeridoo and djembe.
Or planting trees in the mountains, or just enjoying the simple style of jungle life.

When he is not at work in Nepal, he enjoys travelling. He has spent a few seasons tattoing in Goa, India.

The artist is Bikas Gautam, who also runs Grasshopper Studio in Thamel. Bikas has been tattooing professionally for the last 6 years. He has worked in Nepal and India, with seasons in Goa.
